STREET HEALTH LAUNCH: BLAST OFF.

The phenomenal turnout today at the REPORT LAUNCH and EXHIBIT OPENING made me fall in love with Toronto all over again. Even though the subject was grim, the news tragic.

Over 250 of us gathered at the Church of the Holy Trinity: media, politicians, advocates and members of the homeless community to hear the STREET HEALTH REPORt statistics, to discuss 13 policy recommendations and to view and listen to STREET HEALTH STORIES photo + sound exhibit.

The full report is now available on-line at www.streethealth.ca

And the 8.5 minute film, STREET HEALTH STORIES, will premiere on CBC News: Sunday this weekend (check local listings).

Also check out the Toronto Star front page story that kick-started the day today.

BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME

The latest Filmmaker-in-Residence collaborators are a skilled team of carpenters.

I went down to the shop today to check out progress on the photo/sound installation build, and I was really wowed. Thanks to the hard work of old FIR pals and exhibit designers, Orla and Michael, the project is coming to life.

The build is actually sponsored by the new Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute of St. Michael’s Hospital, and the exhibit will go on permanent loan to them from the NFB. It’s a great arrangement, as the institute will continue showing and sharing the work publicly in various venues long after FIR is out of the hospital.

6 days to go ’till launch!

AN ANIMATED SUMMER

Those nine weeks sure went fast!

We’ve finished our summer session with the Seneca animation team, and last Monday, we came together to review some of the scenes. It’s the first time I’ve actually seen the scenes within the timeline of the entire roughcut film, and it’s really exciting.

It’s been tough work for all of us, trying to find the right tone and balance for the animation and how it would work with live action. For me, it’s been like Jazz, a delicate relationship between the ‘real’ and the ‘illustrated’.

“I’ve learned how to see the whole instead of just the part I’m working on in a film,” said Andrew. Dianna said she has a whole new understanding of documentary: “It’s so much work to make a coherent story!”

Branden, our FIR guru in all things technical, joined us to shoot some “making of” scenes for the DVD too. We’re hoping to finish up the film throughout September, and we’re working on a new chapter to tell the story of the film for our website. I don’t want to give away too much from the film, but here’s a few snaps (courtesy of photog Soos) from our day.
